Island Grown in the San Juans celebrates the bounty of farms and locally-grown food in the heart of the Salish Sea.
The program, run by the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild (Ag Guild), aims to increase awareness and sales of local food and agriculture products. When the program began, less than 1% of total food sales in the county went to local goods.
As of 2022, we were up to 3.7%. The county goal is to reach 10% by 2035, which would equate to $26M in local food sales. Together, we can reach this goal and set the table for an abundant food future for generations to come.
Why Eat Local?
Treat your Taste Buds
Seasonal and sustainably raised and caught food is more ripe, flavorful, and carefully harvested than its far-traveled and out-of-season counterparts. Eating local means one-of-a-kind meals.
Enjoy Good Health
Fresh and whole foods are a powerful way to keep you and your family healthy. Local farmers care about the families they are feeding and have a deep sense of responsibility to keep their food safe. Eating local first means putting the health of your family first!
Make your $ Work Harder
Dollars spent on local food circulate repeatedly throughout our food system and local economy, supporting local farmers and food businesses and creating local jobs. Nourish the community you love!
Support Your Neighbors
Local farmers, fishers, farm workers, delivery truck drivers, grocery store employees, cooks, and many others rely on us. Our community food businesses work hard to provide food we can trust. By supporting them we show we care!
Save Our Farmland
Washington is home to some of the richest farmland in the world, and by supporting local farms you help family farms thrive. Our farms are part of what make Washington and the San Juan Islands such a beautiful (and flavorful!) place to live.
Eat For The Future
Eating local is good for you and the planet! Across the state, farmers, ranchers, and fishers work hard to be good stewards of our land and waters, making sure our kids inherit healthy food and a healthy planet.
